Viticulture

The incredibly strong winemaking results all owe their success to the work done in the vineyard.  Many years of sustainable viticulture and a philosophy of minimal inputs has been a long time in the making, but the quality of grapes produced during some of the most severe drought conditions ever experienced are proof positive that investing in long term soil health and organic viticulture are the best way to acheive improvements in quality.

Graeme Miles

Graeme has generations of Pyrenees clay and quartz in his blood and understands the local environment better than anyone.  His intimate knowledge of local flora and fauna and his love of the bush has instilled him with an almost instinctive understanding of how nature works.  A beleiver in organic and biodynamic farming long before he had heard the terms, Graeme has long been a champion of natural farming.

Experience in several local vineyards before joining Mount Avoca in the 1990s, Graeme has been one of the main reasons Mount Avoca has been able to not just withstand the 17 years of drought but develop a strong and healthy vineyard in this time and produce wines that are now reflecting the true potential of the terroir.
