A Day at Mount Avoca

A Day at Mount Avoca

What it's like to spend a night at Mount Avoca

Grab your bag, pack the car and get going. Your destination? The tiny town of Avoca, our home, which is a touch over two hours from Melbourne. It's a quiet, unassuming place, but the vines' roots run deep here, with our region's winemaking history dating back to the 1860s. We're incredibly proud of our patch of earth and love showing visitors around.

An afternoon at the cellar door

Drive through the gates and you'll soon be greeted by our cellar door, a small cottage shaded by a grove of gum trees. 'Come in and try some wines :),' the sign says, and we mean it. We're Australia's most highly awarded organic winery and our Lagrein, Shiraz and Merlot have all won Best in Show in recent years, so we're pretty proud of what we're pouring.

Our tastings can be run either at the bar or, if it's a nice day, out on the grass. Your host could be Matthew, who owns Mount Avoca, or our winemaker David, or maybe even Jess, who keeps the place humming along. They'll run you through our range, talking about our journey to becoming an organic winery over the past 50 years. You'll also find plenty of vintage wine memorabilia scattered throughout the cellar door.

Once you've tasted the range, pick a bottle of your favourite wine to enjoy out on the grass. We can organise a hamper – with a week's notice – from one of the local providores, featuring tasty sandwiches and a range of cheeses, or there's a communal BBQ available if you'd prefer to pick up something from the butcher in town. From there, the afternoon is yours; play Finska on the grass, or perhaps try your arm at a round of pétanque on the nearby court.

The Eco-Luxe accommodation

Our on-site Eco-Luxe accommodation is the perfect place to relax and recharge. The three private cabins, which were ecologically designed, are outfitted with a stunning master bedroom, decadent bathroom complete with spa bath, and a light-filled living area that opens onto a deck.

If you've already dropped your car at the accommodation, you can stroll up from the cellar door and enjoy the open landscape with vineyard views out towards Mount Avoca and the Pyrenees range. We also have bikes available, if you'd prefer to explore the property and surrounding area on two wheels.

The Eco-Luxe cabins come with a complimentary bottle of Mount Avoca wine, which can be enjoyed on the deck along with a book from the extensive library. Each cabin has a private BBQ, so we recommend picking up supplies in town then throwing on some music and having a glass or two as the sun sets on another beautiful day in the Pyrenees.

Eco-Luxe Accomodation

The morning after

Take it easy – this is meant to be relaxing. Spend some time in bed listening to the birdsong, then open the curtains and let the light flood in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Each Eco-Luxe cabin comes with a continental breakfast including muesli, yoghurt, fresh fruit, toast, spreads and coffee, so take things at your own pace. When you're ready to check-out, pop down to the cellar door with the key to say goodbye and don't forget to pick up some wine for your home cellar.

If you're not in a rush to head home, there are plenty of ways to spend a day in the Pyrenees, with several other wineries within close driving distance. Wine aside, the world-famous Grampians National Park is just 1.5 hours from Mount Avoca and offers plenty of opportunities to hike, rock climb, cycle or learn some more about the region's Aboriginal history. We're always happy to help and provide suggestions, so don't hesitate to ask our winery crew for some local tips.
